Known as Southern California’s largest aquarium, the Aquarium of the Pacific is a must see during any visit to Long Beach or the greater Los Angeles area. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Long Beach and one of busiest aquariums in the country. With over 1.7 million visitors each year, this aquarium ranks #4 in the United States for number of annual guests.
With more than 50 exhibits, the aquarium has over 11,000 animals that represent the splendor and the diversity of the vast Pacific Ocean.
Founded in 1998 as a non-profit organization, the Aquarium of the Pacific redefines the modern aquarium. It is a gathering place to celebrate diverse ideas, cultures, and arts under the banner of exploration and sustainability.
Each month, the aquarium features performing arts, cultural festivals and fine arts exhibits as a way to gain new audiences and make science more accessible to the community.
Daily events include shows addressing marine ecosystems and the potential impact of climate change and rising sea levels. The Aquarium showcases a NOAA “Science on a Sphere” exhibit, a room sized, global display system that uses sophisticated projectors and computers showcase planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere.
The aquarium was the first among museums, zoos, and aquariums in the United States to register its greenhouse gases. Its Watershed classroom is LEED platinum certified, and in 2009 it was recognized for being the nation’s most energy efficient business with revenues under $50M.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is open daily from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM every day of the year, excluding Christmas Day. General admission tickets start at $29.95 for adults and $17.95 for children, and may be purchased online or at the Aquarium.
