The Historical Society of Long Beach is a non-profit founded in 1962 a group of community leaders and activists. The organization’s purpose is to connect Long Beach residents and visitors to the through collection, preservation and exhibition of Long Beach historic materials.
Collections include photographs, documents, newspapers, advertising, maps and other media chronicling local history. Staffed entirely by volunteers for more than 30 years, HSLB hired its first executive director in 1996. Under professional leadership, the Society burgeoned and it now offers one of the best local historical collections in all of Los Angeles County.
Whether you’re a student, researcher, historian, journalist, architect, filmmaker, genealogist or just a history buff, the Historical Society of Long Beach has voluminous information on the region’s past that you won’t find anywhere else.
HSLB has published numerous books, including a photo book detailing the Pike earthquake of 1933, a 6.4 quake that rocked Long Beach and caused nearly 120 fatalities.
The Historical Society of Long Beach is located at 4260 Atlantic Avenue and is open from 1:00-5:00 PM on Tue, Wed and Friday, and 1:00-7:00 PM on Thursdays. It is also open from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday afternoons. It is also open late on the first Friday of every month during the monthly First Friday event.
Its facility on Atlantic Avenue has ample room for large historical collections and researchers alike, and is equipped with a basement vault and temperature controlled archives.
Through its services and programs, HSLB helps to develop an inclusive community narrative that allows residents a deeper understanding of their role in the story of their city.
